This isn't new. Obama has been tweeting since his 2008 campaign.

Not like this.

Something like 130 tweets in the hours leading up the house vote, pleading with people to spam their Republican congresscritter twitter accounts (links provided) begging them not to vote for Boehner's bill...

When news got out that nearly 40,000 of his followers (who presumably got pissed at the spam) bailed on him, the tweets suddenly stopped.

Here is his feed if you want to see the carnage...

It's technically not him. It's run by his re-election campaign staff... When he personally sends a tweet, he ends with '-BO'

Reading Twitters Rules, it looks like they may be guilty of breaking one or two...

Spam: You may not use the Twitter service for the purpose of spamming anyone. What constitutes “spamming” will evolve as we respond to new tricks and tactics by spammers. Some of the factors that we take into account when determining what conduct is considered to be spamming are:
If you have followed a large amount of users in a short amount of time;
If you have followed and unfollowed people in a short time period, particularly by automated means (aggressive follower churn);
If you repeatedly follow and unfollow people, whether to build followers or to garner more attention for your profile;
If you have a small number of followers compared to the amount of people you are following;
If your updates consist mainly of links, and not personal updates;
If you post misleading links;
If a large number of people are blocking you;
The number of spam complaints that have been filed against you;
If you post duplicate content over multiple accounts or multiple duplicate updates on one account;
If you post multiple unrelated updates to a topic using #;
If you post multiple unrelated updates to a trending or popular topic;
If you send large numbers of duplicate @replies or mentions;
If you send large numbers of unsolicited @replies or mentions in an attempt to spam a service or link;
If you add a large number of unrelated users to lists in an attempt to spam a service or link;
If you repeatedly post other users' Tweets as your own;
If you have attempted to "sell" followers, particularly through tactics considered aggressive following or follower churn;
Creating or purchasing accounts in order to gain followers;
Using or promoting third-party sites that claim to get you more followers (such as follower trains, sites promising "more followers fast," or any other site that offers to automatically add followers to your account);
If you create false or misleading Points of Interest;
If you create Points of Interest to namesquat or spam.

Wow, he (or rather his staff) is posting ridiculously much, to the level that it's spam. I apologize for my short-sighted reply.

I saw a CNN Headline News tracker the other day informing me that the White House "rickrolled" it's readers on twitter. Seriously.

Oh, yeah...like we don't have anything bigger to worry about!!

My hubby has paid into Social Security since he was 16...he got his first check this month and it's probably his last unless our Congress can pull their heads out of their asses!! If only he could get all of his "donations" to SS back instead.

(We are screwed!!!)

See, this isn't a big deal, and is kind of funny actually, under normal circumstances. The problem is, if you're going to have a bit of fun at work, you NEED TO GET YOUR **** DONE FIRST.

I see this as a wonderful chance to privatize social security. All the people who are scared of not getting checks should be motivated to hold that money themselves so the irresponsible government doesn't squander it on things that they don't agree with.

Privatizing Social Security defeats the point of Social Security. You might as well just get rid of it.

Excellent point. I agree. Scrap the program and refund the money.

We can't refund what we don't have though. So if we got rid of SS it would probably be a screw you, at least you don't have to pay us anymore kind of thing. Unless maybe you phase it out slowly.

There was/is next to zero chance that the checks for SSI/Medi/etc. won't go out, and even less chance of a default on the debt; too many people bit hard on Barry's dire pronouncements.

The real worry was, and still is, the credit rating. It looks like this deal's cuts are hundreds of billions short of what would make the ratings agencies happy. Rynar has the right of it:

The debt rating agencies aren't impressed. We're still very likely to be downgraded, and rightly so.

Being downgraded is good for us. We'll never stop borrowing money and raising our debt ceiling until people stop loaning us money.

You are missing the true impact of this.

The downgrade of US debt will mandate an absolute flight from US treasuries. Mutual Funds and Retirement Accounts which are made up of only AAA rated entities are going to be forced into a sell-off immediately, precipitating the crash of the bond market.

Not if they are still the most attractive investment. In other words, if they all suck, but the US Treasury just sucks less....

The only thing the US AAA rating does is support the status quo.

If change is desired, you have to disrupt the status quo, right?

Incorrect. They are legally obligated to contain only AAA rated debt instruments.

As long as you are emotionally prepared to watch those around you suffer immensely, and to live without many to most goods and services you have become accustomed to.
