  • Because I made enough last year to max out my weekly benefit amount, any job that pays less than $12/hr is not worth taking unless I do it part-time.
  • At my current pay rate, I receive the same total compensation (pay + UI) for anywhere between 8 and 31 hours.
  • If I work 32 hours or more, I need to work 38 hours to get the same total compensation that the 8-31 range yields.

Can't wait to have a "real job" so I won't have to concern myself with these entertaining bits of trivia any longer.

I think this pretty clearly highlights what people mean when they say we're paying people not to work.

It's a government-mandated insurance policy. If I lose my job, I'm collecting the benefits I paid into.

The trivia sounds a little ridiculous, but I have to say that $12/hr is jack and ****, and wouldn't even come close to the cost of the daycare I'd have to pay to go back to work.

This. I've been working since I was 16 and have never until this year collected UI benefits. I don't feel like I'm robbing anyone by collecting while I look for work.

Yeah, even the $15/hr I'm getting right now isn't all that hot but it's better than the $455/wk that UI would pay me, and remember ... that's the maximum weekly benefit amount. No matter how much you got paid at the job from which you were laid off, you can't collect more than that. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who simply cannot make ends meet while collecting unemployment.

You paid in you should get. It shouldn't be getting extended into infinity either. If you do get a pt job then the benefit money lasts longer. Something to consider as well.

I'm on a short-term contract. I don't have health insurance.

60% of what you make up to xxx dollars a week. NV has a similar cap.

Yeah, I used to think it was 60% too ... and then I found out about the cap.
