It's a government-mandated insurance policy. If I lose my job, I'm collecting the benefits I paid into.
This. I've been working since I was 16 and have never until this year collected UI benefits. I don't feel like I'm robbing anyone by collecting while I look for work.

The trivia sounds a little ridiculous, but I have to say that $12/hr is jack and ****, and wouldn't even come close to the cost of the daycare I'd have to pay to go back to work.
Yeah, even the $15/hr I'm getting right now isn't all that hot but it's better than the $455/wk that UI would pay me, and remember ... that's the
maximum weekly benefit amount. No matter how much you got paid at the job from which you were laid off, you can't collect more than that. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who simply cannot make ends meet while collecting unemployment.
