Curious as to what about Oblivion turned you off.

My biggest complaint would have to be the combat system. I loved the size of the world and the many things to do in it, but the combat could have been better.

That said, in the short amount of time I have played Dead Island so far, the combat "feels" better than it did in Oblivion.

The same thing that turned me off Morrowind and the Grand Theft Auto series ...

A great lack of people in my MMO.

Yeah, Oblivion is a piece and I also refuse to play any game that people say is similar. This includes Fallout 3. The games are FAR too open for a single player. You get so off track with side quests and **** that you forget about the main storyline completely at points. I don't want that; 90% of games I play are because I enjoy the stories. Not to mention the combat sucked, and enemies scaling with your power ALWAYS **** sucks. Seriously, how do you feel like a hero when a rat in a field is still able to **** you up?

Skyrim looks like it might be fun, but I'm going to wait and see on that one.

O hai, exact response I was going to give.

Exactly. I don't say this to discredit anyone's enjoyment of the game(s) or the things Bethesda does do incredibly well; I just loathe their games because they aren't the kind of games one should play alone.

I tend to agree with Nek when he ponders out loud about multiplayer oblivion style. Then I comment that I still dislike Oblivion's systems.

Yeah, the systems need to go in a large way with Bethesda games, but I hear Fallout 3 and New Vegas did a lot to correct some huge systems errors present in Oblivion.

They did, or at the very least, they were viscerally entertaining for me in ways that Oblivion never was.

On the GoW3 topic for a second, I'm a few checkpoints into act 2 and damn, this game rocks.

Ok, back to derail!

Also, Khross, most of those games are several years old or more. Anything newer that you're playing and like (besides Deus Ex?)

I do, in fact, ponder as loudly as I can about multiplayer TES games. Oblivion tried to immerse me in a world loaded with stock characters and bad voice acting. I wanted to enjoy it with someone else because it lent itself to a leveling system that almost encouraged party play. I pictured the silver-tongued devil persuading the NPCs to do our bidding while the strong-armed warrior made scary poses behind him.

Finished Act 3 last night and jumped on some multiplayer for the first time since part 1. It's pretty fun! One thing I've always hated about Gears, though, is how awkward it gets when things are in melee range.

You'll like the ending, I'm sure.

Hoooray!

I was playing on hardcore, but that last encounter is **** annoying with the NPCs. I gave up and set it to normal.

Just beat it as well. Satisfying ending, though I wouldn't have minded 10 more minutes of dialogue from Adam Fenix.

That's kind of a different strokes thing I guess.

I personally *love* open world single player games. The concept of exploring remote places, discovery, etc. is very appealing to me, totally irrelevant to the number of other players there are. In fact, I've been finding myself preferring them without other players and almost think WoW would be improved for me redesigned as a single player game, keeping the world as is.

So anyways I'm a huge fan of what the Elder Scrolls games *attempt* to do, though I don't feel they've succeeded yet, and think their attempts peaked with a cross between Daggerfall and Morrowind. (Daggerfall and Arena before it had far bigger worlds than the recent games, but so much of it was procedurally done that much of it felt the same except for the rare landmark).

That said, I don't think Dead Island compares with Oblivion that way. Yeah, it's kind of an "open world" environment, but with a rather focused story, and sidequests that tie in well with it: quests involving people trying to survive and get off the island.

Myrrah is totally unexplained, unless there is a collectible that sheds light on her.
