I am a little surprised the women's shelter didn't need someone that speaks Spanish though. Did you mention that?

This is true.

And yes, I did mention that I was fluent in Spanish, but we don't have a hispanic population in our area. That's about an hour North of us and 3 hours south of us....which is why my degree in Spanish means absolutely diddly-squat here.
I used to think that getting a degree was the smartest thing I ever did....now, I kinda feel like it was the stupidest thing I ever did. :psyduck: At the very least, I should have majored in something more marketable....I had no idea what I was doing.

I've never once used my degree professionally. What college did, though, was provide me with contacts that have led (sometimes directly, increasingly circuitously) to my current position.

Majoring in a foreign language is very marketable. You just happen to be in a spot where that's not as true as elsewhere. If relocating were an option, you could be in demand.

I'm tellin' ya, take the test for los diablos verde!

Do you think my sweet and naive self is a good candidate for carrying guns and hunting down terrorists and domestic invaders? I'm not sure I even know how to operate a squirt gun properly, hahaha!

Hop I'm in BFE Mississippi.

In all honesty, there's really not much likelyhood of encountering a terrorist. Narcotics traffikers and criminal aliens are the biggest danger. As for the rest, that is what training is for. There are small women that do this sort of work, and plenty of people who are fairly sweet.

Just be prepared to get yelled at a lot during the academy!

This is a really important thing to remember- contacts are huge.

LK, it seems like a lot of the places you're talking to people are the job equivalent of blind dates- you're going to meet them without them having any foreknowledge of you, who you are, etc.

Personal or professional contacts that can introduce you to people they know or help facilitate things getting started are huge- they don't necessarily mean you can do things you aren't qualified for, but a personal recommendation goes a long way to getting you a better consideration/chance right out of the door.

DE: I'm reading about it now (and have been for the past hour and a half) and it looks like a pretty intense application and training process. I'm impressed. A 4-6 hour long polygraph exam just to apply?? And it takes 6-9 months from the initial application to the offer letter, if you pass the background check and meet all the qualifications. I'm intrigued though...I wonder if I am emotionally mature enough (everything makes me angry and cry) and physically capable (I am thin but have zero endurance and just walking up a flight of stairs has my heart pounding out of my chest and gets me out of breath.)
Hmmmmm. Is this for me? I know my weaknesses are against me, but the pay and benefits sound great as does the idea of having a job that's in black and white...I'd know exactly what was expected of me, which is a plus because I'm the kind of person that gets lost in the gray areas. Looks like it'd build self-confidence too.

I'd offer you a referral but we are only hiring for in Gulfport MS currently which sounds like it is nowhere near you.

You have more than enough time to work out and get youself ready. The application process IS long, but in a way that's good because if something else comes up you'd rather do, you can change your mind. There's also the benefit that it gives you plenty of time to plan for it.

The polygraph isn't to apply; it's part of the application process, and is nothing to worry about. You do sometimes have to admit some embarrassing things but they generally are not nearly as big a deal as you think they are.

As for emotional maturity.. at your age, it's time you started developing that, if everything makes you angry and cry. That's not to say you shouldn't get angry and cry sometimes, but if it's all the time, I'd suggest that it's something you can do. Working out will help with that; it just takes self-discipline. The other thing to remember is, nothing is meant personally. It doesn't matter if you are an emotional person, what matters is whether you can control them and do what you need to be done.

It is very much a thing that most people can do, if they put their mind to it.

Hop: Thanks for the thought. I'm about 4 hours north of Gulfport.

DE: I suspect it has a lot to do with grief and the lack of self-discipline. I know I should start exercising, but I'm so lazy. I'd say I don't know where to start, but we have a YMCA right down the road from us, so that's not really an excuse, now is it? I guess I need to get in shape.

Our roads are not very bike friendly around here at all...I'd get hit by a car. If I could buy a bike rack though, there is a place to ride them at the state park not too far from here.
Tell NF to buy his lazy wife a bicycle for Christmas! :D

I live in Vegas. Your roads can't be worse than ours in terms of cycling unfriendliness. Cycling isn't inherently dangerous as long as you keep your wits about you and pay attention to your surroundings.

However, getting out and riding on the MUP is a good plan as well. Take Fox and yer boy and make a family thing out of it.

A decent place to start. You can also look at local thrift stores and whatnot if you or Fox are mechanically inclined. The important thing though is, no matter what you're rollin on, get out there and ride! :)

I've followed your youtube channel since you first began sharing video's here on the glade. Its not necessarily easy money, but there is nice money to be made on youtube for people with creativity and motivation to try and do it. It starts slow, both channel growth & the money, but a snowball effect begins to pick up. It might not be something that will pay off right away, but it seems like it might be something you'd be passionate about.

Just a thought. I mean if I can make money from posting video game footage to the internet. I'd wager a talented person like yourself can do quite a bit better.
