Finally finished my first playthrough. Very satisfying. Up until the very end, it was completely epic. One of the best gaming experiences I've had in a long time. I laughed, I cried, and I even had a couple of WTF moments.
The best part of the experience for me, was the scale of the battles. From the moment the Reapers landed on Earth, and you begin to fight you way off planet, to the final battle, it seemed you were always fighting in the shadow of some huge-ass Reapers. It just all felt so....hopeless. You knew you couldn't save everybody. Hell, you weren't even sure if you could save anybody. And you might be neck-deep in enemies, and fighting for you life, but even if you survived, how the hell were you gonna get passed that huge walking Reaper firing it's giant red laser of death at everything. Bioware really nailed this part of the game, IMHO. There was always something big going on in the background that really made the whole "Reapers are here to destroy all life in the galaxy" vibe stand out.
Also, the sound effects and the soundtrack were amazing. Very, very good, and extremely immersing. The first time I heard a Banshee wail in the Monastary with all the lights off, I nearly pissed myself. And the random conversations you can overhear are really cool. Like the human teenage girl waiting for her parents to arrive at the refugee camp, and the Turian security officer trying to cheer her up. That one and several other ones like it really made things hit home, for me.
Overall, I'm mostly pleased with the Mass Effect story, as a whole. I'm curious to see what they have planned as far as DLC from this point on. Also, multiplayer is amazing good. I was not expecting it to be as much fun, or to be as polished as it is now. It's a really fun experience, and I really think that everyone should try it out. You might be surprised at how much you enjoy it.
Also, I agree with Raltar, the "bromance" scene with Garrus was awesome! I loved it.
