It occurs to me that folks here might not know I am a gun owner. I have 5 firearms, 4 of which are handguns. I LIKE shooting guns and generally having them available. However, I have seen over my years that there are a lot of people who are very irresponsible with firearms and especially in a dense urban setting, that is asking for trouble.

Where did I ever say that there could be no extenuating circumstances?

When you didn't qualify your query.

I'd be fine with someone building a gun range on their property provided it met good safety standards that took into account the fact that they are in a residential area. My entire position is that I expect that people need to be safe with firearms. Sadly, there are many people out there who aren't and can't be bothered enough to learn what those safe practices are, so we are forced to mandate them.

You were going good right up until you went over the cliff. We are not forced to mandate them, as they are not a significant problem. We have penalties for irresponsible behavior. That's all that's needed.

Your position seemed to be one of, "I'm on my property I'll do whatever the **** I want" without regard to the fact that without solid precautions firing a gun (inside or out) in a residential area would present a significant risk to neighbors.

That is the part I have issue with.

Hell, if I could legally build a gun range in my basement, I likely would as I both have the space as well as I hate going to public indoor ranges.

I've never advocated irresponsibility. But a responsible adult should not, on their own property, need to be restricted by the fears of those outside.

Not sure what FFL stands for, but my understanding is that things like gun shows and other private sales don't have the same background check requirements that dealers do. Is that not the case?

Federally Firearm License - dealers. All dealers at a gun show also do this. Private sales vary from state to state here in pa handguns that are not direct family transfer have to go through an FFL while long guns may be sold without doing so.

Interesting. Didn't realize the background checks were now required at gun shows. When you say "dealers at a gun show", though, does that mean anyone and everyone who sells a gun there, or is there some exception for small-time sellers?

Anyone who sells firearms that does not expect to regularly make a profit at it doesn't (in most states) have to do a background check. Its been a long myth that there is some loophole regarding gunshows but there isn't. Any dealer who has a table there (everyone selling guns at a table is a dealer) has to do background checks through NICS (and in some states like Pa a separate one through the State system). Any private person selling doesn't have to (in most states) but its the same at the gun show as in the gun show parking lot as it is on the sidewalk in front of their house or the police station. No law specifically changes the rules in a state at a gun show - in any state.

Also registration was tried in Canada. Hundred of millions wasted - not useful - it was shut down today because it was costly and useless...so lets see it done here?

Gun shows are evil because there are guns there, along with people who want to own guns.

Sometimes I like chicken sandwiches, but other times roast beef is better.

But why don't we just exhume the body?
