iron8ically, because of this, I find him to be a not so useful measure of DPS. Sure you could pull 9k+ on him but what use is that,0 really for measuring usefull dps?

it's the only really useful place for measuring DPS (apart from the target dummies.) In various different fights, if you assign different DPS classes to different tasks, it's going to change their totals and they can't be compared to each other. For example, in Ulduar, against XT, if you assign a couple people to Area-Effect-kill-the-bot-spawns duty, it's going to change their DPS totals vs. those who stay on the heart/XT. In a battle like Jaraxus, all the ranged attackers switching between the maidens and infernals is so random, as is your need to move to avoid various threats, the spawns might be out of range, etc. This makes your DPS often quite random, so not a good measure. The only real valuable DPS measure is when one is on a single target, without having to move, hitting your rotation nonstop.

For the record, I have no idea how people hit 9k DPS against a single target without mitigating circumstances. I'm lucky to top 6K, and I have decent gear (mostly 226-245.)

That's my point. It's like saying a windsock is a good device for measuring wind direction when the actual application is a hurricane.

I can run all day and build up awesome speed and footwork, but that doesn't mean I'm going to be a great running back or 1 guard. The ability to do awesome DPS in a static situation doesn't always translate over to the ability to do it in more complex situations.

I know players who do 7k on PW (my best is mid 5's on 10m) but I can beat them on even mildly difficult fights like Satharion because of minor amount of movement required.

I hate having to move in a fight like that. Most of my damage comes from shots that require me to stand still to use (marksman gets huge chunks of its damage from autoshot, steady shot, and the like). All the so-called "tactics" of these ridiculously overengineered fights don't make them more fun. They just make them frantic. I hate when they try to make an RPG into an action game...if a game like Dragon Age which lets you pause and select your tactics actually worked multiplayer, I'd prefer it. (but of course it doesn't, for obvious reasons.)

Hardly. There's nothing pratical about the encounter because it's so plain. That makes it an impratical metric in terms of applicability to typical raid (hell even regular instance) encounters.

Yeah, melee have to deal with it to. I don't typically like the over dynamic fights for the sake of sheer technical aspect. I do like them when they are fun. MC had no cool fights. BWL had many (Razorgore, Vaelestrasz, Chromaggus and Nefarion).

I like the movement, it makes me really pay attention and be engaged. Mimiron comes to mind as an excellent example. And the tunnel run I just did in the second 5 man is awesome and fun.

Being able to maintain good dps, while moving around and adjusting to the shifting situation is what separates the men from the boys.

I'm amazed at how much easier it is to get good numbers leveling my huinter than it was with my pally.

I'm sure some of it has to do with experience, but I'm close to breaking 2k at level 76, specced BM, and not pushing the edge of my abilities.

Unfortunate for the analogy, not for her DPS.

I may be a woman, but Tahlla is a female Orc. That makes her more man than any of you nancy boys.

Zyerne is female too, so that's not much of an insult.

It's why I generally top DPS meters even though I shouldn't be, by rights. Over time, though, our Guild DPS has got a lot better. We have a mage and a DK that I struggle over the top spot with.

Taly - it's not the size of your toon, it's how you...oh, nevermind.

So has everyone done the 3 new instances? Good stuff. I'm not huge on the lore but I enjoyed the final instance (Halls of Reflection I think it is?). I wont post any spoilers but the quest line and ending is neat. Fairly challenging too on heroic as opposed to the stomping I was used to on the other instances.

Indeed, it's nice to have some instances where people actually have to pay some attention to what they are doing and were CC is actually useful again.

Even regular HoR almost stomped the group I was with.

But than tanks and AE aggro are screwed up badly now, as respects positioning. Not sure what the new patch did, but it was not nice to tanks.

Not really. Peak practical DPS is what you can achieve in game in ideal circumstances. Peak practicable DPS depends on the fight and its various mechanics/complications.

In doing the first two fights in ICC... our DPS has taken a HUGE hit.

Gorramn movement fights. THank god Marrowgar's hitbox is so ginormous, or I'd spend even MORE time off target.

Running back and forth killing trash mobs in the Deathwhisper fight? Bleh. That sucks too.

Yeh, they're not *bad*, but I'm built to sit in combat and beat stuff down. If I can't do that, why bring me? If a hunter/mage/lock/etc can do better DPS than a rogue *because* of the fight mechanics... its not really a fair thing.

At least DB Saurfang looks like a stand there and rip off good DPS for 10 mins :)

HoR on heroic is still a bit of a nail biter for my peeps. And that makes it very fun. We have the waves down pat now between myself and a priest. But the last section is still down to the wire. I am inevitably looking at a big white pie plate of doom just before the wall comes down.
