Quote:
Tehran, Iran (CNN) -- They may be a far cry from their Western counterparts fighting for the acceptance to breast-feed -- or go topless -- in public, but two girls clobbered a cleric recently in a small town in Iran when he admonished one of them to cover herself more completely.

Quote:
He told one of the girls to cover up, the report said.

"She responded by telling me to cover my eyes, which was very insulting to me," Beheshti said. So he asked her a second time to cover up and also to put a lid on what he felt was verbal abuse.

She hit the man of the cloth, and he hit the ground.

"I don't remember what happened after that," he said. "I just felt her kicks and heard her insults."

Beheshti, who emerged from the infirmary three days later, said he did not file a complaint against the girls.

I really do not see it as being a breech of religion of peace. I see this more as being fed up with the rules and the beginning of demanding change.

Women's Liberation for the middle east and all that.

While admittedly likely, why assume they are Muslim?

Why is this awesome? They should have just disobeyed him, not beat him.

Because ~99.6% of Iranians are Muslim.

According to the article, the incident occured in Iran, involved a cleric and 2 girls who were on the way to a mosque to pray, and afterwards he mentioned "Islamic Hijab".

What channel will they be showing her execution on?

The cleric was on the way to the mosque for prayers, not necessarily the women.

Maybe, but reading a little between the lines it seems to me the cleric escalated it when he told them "to put a lid on what he felt was verbal abuse". Based on past reports of how clerics treat women over there, I highly suspect that he wasn't cordial and it wouldn't surprise me if he started the physical altercation and then got his *** handed to him.

Either way, based on my readings of how women are treated in that part of the world, most men could probably use an *** kicking or two by women over there.

And yet there was, what, a greater than 99% chance they were Muslim and you're still pursuing this?

So you're admitting you're not absolutely sure they were Muslim. /ducks

I think we can safely assume the cleric was not on the way to the mosque for the women.

Re: 99%... I wonder how Muslim Iran really is. Sure, a whole bunch of people may profess to be Muslim, but when sharia's answer to apostates is execution, would you really expect anyone to say any different? You bet your *** I'm the 99%.

That's probably true, but even if it is, the number of non-muslim "muslims" is probably pretty, not more than a few percent at the absolute most.

Iraq is 97% muslim, and it's never been run by a religious government in the way Iran was. Under Saddam, the number of non-muslims was higher (Saddam was surprisingly tolerant of Christianity) but still we're only talking about half a million people difference or so; the muslim population was still well in excess of 90%

Now, how devoutly muslim Iranians are, that's another question.

Apostate doesn't mean "non-muslim". Apostate means "renounced X", where in this case X = Islam. It's fine with sharia not to be muslim, as long as you never were muslim.

I probably should have qualified what I was getting at a little better. Iran may be 98-99% "Muslim" but I highly doubt that means it's 98-99% full of strict doctrinal adherents.

I was baptized when I was two months old, and for me, a formal renunciation of Catholicism would mean excommunication. For a Muslim living somewhere where sharia might be applied to say "you know what, this sucks and these people are crazy, I'm out" is a death sentence. Unfortunately, if your parents started raising you in a particular faith long before you had any understanding of your own about what that even meant, then leaving is apostasy, no? Granted I don't know all that much about Islam, and they may very well have some kind of confirmation of faith when children reach an age where they're expected to be able to reason for themselves.

Anyway, the upshot of all that is just that I saw a number of 99% being tossed around, and doubted seriously that it was reasonable to just lump everyone together. Muslim-on-Muslim violence is sorta akin to saying Pentecostal-on-Lutheran violence like they're equivalent.

Or, maybe Amish-on-Amish violence… /smh
Quote:
CLEVELAND — Nine of 16 Amish convicted in beard- and hair-cutting attacks on fellow Amish in Ohio have remained free, but the government wants them locked up, which could leave up to 50 children with one or both parents behind bars… Prosecutors and witnesses described how sons pulled their father out of bed and chopped off his beard in the moonlight and how women surrounded their mother-in-law and cut off two feet of her hair, taking it down to the scalp in some places.

Judging by how easily clerics whip their flocks into frenzies, and the frequency with which they do so, I don't think there's any real expectation that their members be able to reason at all.

Not all muslims, or even Iranian muslims, are created equal, but if we were talking about the overall breakdown of the United States as far as religion goes, it would not be out of line to lump Lutherans, Pentecostals, and Amish together as Christians.

Fair enough, but at the same time I think there's a great deal of difference between the snake-handling, speaking-in-tongues types, and your run of the mill Episcopalian. Just like there's a distinction to be made between the "Muslim" who tells a woman to cover herself, and the "Muslim" who had a crappy day one day, decided enough was enough and thwacked the dude.
