This isn't always a good solution, though. It just makes the lines subject to entirely different risks and hazards, and down for longer when there's a problem.

I'm outside of Philly too, not that far from Elmo. My daughter and I are well.

My mom arrived Sun. afternoon, and invited my sister over. (Sis was worried about a massive tree in her yard - a huge branch came down in Irene, damaging 2 cars and a fence.) So she brought her toddler and 1-month-old infant on Monday morning and camped out with us. Her husband was at the hospital where he works, and just stayed there until Tues. afternoon.

Lost power for an hour on Mon. afternoon, then again that evening through Wed. evening. Cell coverage was nearly non-existent on Monday due to tower damage or lack of power, but was mostly back to normal on Tuesday. I have a gas stove, so could still cook and heat water for tea (caffeine!). We don't lose water in power outtages, but I had a decent amount set aside anyway. I have a fireplace for heat. It was chilly, especially at night, but not too bad.

I prepped for water in the family room downstairs, but really didn't get any. The house didn't sustain any damage, although a tree came down between my and the neighbor's yard. He lost some siding, but seemed to be ok, otherwise. The food in the chest freezer mostly survived - anything at the bottom was still solid. Stuff in the basket at the top... not so much. Some of the food in the fridge/freezer was lost, or had to be cooked and used right away. (We've eaten really well these past few days!) There are things I will do differently next time, like moving everything from the normal freezer into the chest freezer. I had frozen jugs of water and placed them in the fridge, which helped maintain temp in there.

I work in central NJ, and my site still has no power. We've been closed all week, and we won't know until early next week when it will reopen. Roads are still closed and there are gasoline shortages, so my boss has told me that she doesn't know when I should attempt to come back. Luckily, we can work remotely (if we have power/internet). I've been up and running since yesterday morning. A second document coordinator finally got online today. One manager lost her house in a fire when her power came back on. Others had severe roof damage.

So, we were lucky where I am. It's still difficult to get around in some places, and I have neighbors on my street who still don't have power. My daughter's school re-opened on Thurs., with only one elementary school in the district still closed due to roof damage. It could have been worse. (We could have gotten the snow too!)

My roof is a total loss. They expect it will be at least two weeks until the claim even clears. Oh well.

Reports from many of my SCA friends back east is that they are on Pennsic Mode. Pennsic is the big two week camping trip near Slippery Rock, they are all breaking out their camping gear, stores of water and the forever keepable camp food reserves, wearing their cloaks and other warm garb. Hooray for the hobby.

I'm spoiled at Pennsic, since I have electricity there. Despite many of my lanterns being in storage near Coopers Lake, I had enough at home to keep things semi-illuminated, without needing to pull out oil lamps. I had the camp stove close at hand to set up outdoors after the wind/rain stopped, but didn't need it. Sleeping bags and wool or fleece blankets did the trick at night, and I had sweatshirts and sweaters to share with my mom and sis for during the day.

I have some cute photos of my mom and daughter playing board games by flashlight. I also had charged walkie-talkies, and my daughter had fun exploring the house in the dark with a flashlight and reporting back to me by radio.
