That bunch of sarcasm makes sense as long as you're applying it to the cyclists using up entire lanes and holding up traffic behind them. Although then you'd be a disabled guy who has intentionally chosen to block off multiple doors at once because his leisure time is more important than the other 30 people trying to get in to work.

The recreation of the one does not outweigh the needs of the many.

Note that the exact same thing can be said about people who drive significantly under the speed limit all the time in their cars. If you can't drive close to the speed limit, get the **** off the road. One thing I hate about this smaller city compared to when I lived in Toronto, far too many people think it's perfectly acceptable to drive 40km/h in a 60km/h zone.

His need to get to point B is equally valid as your need to get to point B.

And so he intentionally chooses a method of getting there that is incredibly slow and inefficient, so that he gets there three times longer? Furthermore, he chooses to hog a lane of traffic to himself (as is his legal right) which prevents passing, and forces everyone else on the highway to slow down to his speed. He could get over and let the long line of cars past, but he doesn't. And yet the angry people driving 20km/h stuck behind him are somehow the ones being selfish.

I'm sorry, no. His "need" isn't the same, or he'd have driven. Or taken the bus. A bicycle is not a transportation method in most of the western world -- it's a means of exercise and recreation. Even if it was the same need, his need is not equal to the needs of the 30+ cars filled with people that he's holding up behind him. And even if that were not the case, he certainly should pull over and let the cars past.

Personally, I think the police need to start handing out tickets for obstructing the flow of traffic and travelling too slowly to anyone who is slowing traffic below the speed limit and refusing to move out of the way so people can pass. There need to be minimum cruising speeds (within 5-10 KM/H of the posted maximum) that are enforced if you're going to hog a lane to yourself, no matter what type of vehicle you are in.

Alaska has partially solved this problem. I find this to be a solid law that should be expanded to all vehicles and all states.

http://www.motorists.org/chapters/alaska

Quote:
Points of Interest
•Alaska has a ticket surcharge over and above the fine schedule.
•A driver's license can be suspended for failure to pay a traffic ticket.
•Alaska law requires a motorhome or travel trailer/truck with more than 5 vehicles behind it to turn off the main roadway and let the traffic by.
•Motorists should always be looking for large animals (such as caribou, bear, and moose) in the roadway.

I'm not sure of any specific laws here, but if I'm driving on a narrow 2 lane road and have 2 or more vehicles lined up behind me, I will try to pull over and let them pass as soon as I possibly can. I am not in a hurry to get where I'm going...I tend to just enjoy the journey.

I was informed that was an unwritten Texas Law.

Didn't you tell me that you DRIVE from Canada to Disney World, instead of using the quickest and most efficient method of travel? Something tells me it takes at least 3 times as long to drive as it does to fly. OMGZORS HYPOCRITE!!!

If he stays to the right and allows people to pass he's doing what he can. It's then the motorists responsibility to wait (preferably without the tears) for a safe passing opportunity.

Don't be naive. Your smarter than this. First, there's a benefit to what he's doing that you don't get while driving - exercise. What's more important, his health or your schedule? Secondly, it's foolish to suggest that everyone has the means to drive.

You seem to be needing to focus on a worst case scenario to make your point. 30+ cars full of people? None can pass because of 1 biker? If your argument requires this, it's somewhat telling.

True, because nothing gets cars moving faster than a cop on the side of the road.

You'd have a point, if I parked in front of the plane waiting to takeoff and didn't move for 20 minutes.

Except he doesn't. That's the whole point!

It's not a worst case scenario. it's a daily occurrence!

You seem to be focusing on courteous bikers who stay to the side and let people past. Those ones aren't the problem ones! I've been talking from the beginning here about bikes hogging a lane to themselves. You think I'm speaking hypothetically?

Yes. I have never seen a biker hogging a lane and refusing to move over. As for all these arguments about 3-foot laws and tickets, I've never seen or heard of anyone actually getting one.

Since we're on the subject of tickets, though, most places have a law against obstructing the flow of traffic, and it would apply to bicyclists as much as motor vehicles.

If there's a specific problem where you live, then maybe bike riders in Toronto are just assholes. Down here, however, bicycling is a major hobby. I've never seen so many fancy bikes or people in spandex in my life, and I have yet to see any of them hogging a lane.

Since most bike laws I've seen require them to stay to the right, when possible, I think your problem is solved. Unless you think we need a law that requires bikers to follow the law?

The only time I'm "hogging a lane" instead of being on the right as a biker is if I need to do so to legally make a left hand turn at an intersection.
