Definitely a different design path, though, with the focus on external expansion via Thunderbolt 2.

I think it's a brilliant form factor. It only requires a few modifications to have your own R2 unit.

Except that it's not supposed to rack. It's for going on your desk, or underneath your desk. Key elements of that design are going to push forward system performance because you vent heat much better. Thermal runaway is a big problem for high-powered machines. That's why water cooling got so popular with people who style themselves as l33t modders, despite the fact that piping water through several thousand dollars worth of electronic equipment is **** retarded.

It really is a great design. I would have preferred 90 degree edges, but the amount of power they've got in such a small footprint is really pretty impressive.

The lack of 90 degree edges is exactly what led me to believe it was for heat flow before I read the article. Heat is flowing radially inward and being shot up the core and out of the system. If you had a rectangular base, the heat in the corners takes longer to make its way to the exhaust pipe. That slows down your rate of cooling.

What I didn't (and couldn't) see until Farsky's link is that everything is mounted onto the same heat sink. That level of coordination between devices isn't something that you're going to be able to do in your basement. What we're seeing here is that do-it-yourself upgradeability is at odds with system performance.

Upgradeability is at odds with efficiency. You can still throw more cooling than would otherwise be necessary at the problem, if you don't mind increased volume and noise.

Except that heat has been an ever-present problem in computer design. Improvements in heat flow efficiency have a direct impact on improvements in performance. Apply that heat flow architecture to a device twice its size. What do you now have to do to send it into thermal shutdown?
