Hop, on the titans -- you're describing getting rodeo'd with the pilots latching on. You can jump onto a titan, which will cause you to climb up and rip off a panel on top, which you can then shoot into for direct damage even when the titan's shielded. Note -- if you shoot into the panel with anti-titan weapons, you'll take damage yourself, as well. So either use spaced out very small bursts with the sidewinder or switch to your carbine/rifle/shotgun/sidearm/whatever.
Ah, I assumed it was an ability that you unlocked later. Good to know I can try this.

Some matches, I feel like I'm more productive leaving the titan on follow or guard and staying on foot myself. The auto-titan AI isn't going to slaughter whole teams, but it can attract attention well and does a good job of keeping the area clear of NPCs (who, contrary to first impressions, can and will kill you if you completely ignore them) so you can focus on enemy pilots and titans.
I always feel this way. I always just set my titan to auto-follow and it can handle engaging piloted titans while I try to plink them with my AT weapon.

I'm not really sold on the default assault titan. I don't really like the chaingun. Try experimenting with the tank (or artillery, I don't remember when that unlocks) loadout instead. I prefer the tank's 40mm cannon and I can usually do some damage with the nuke ejection when it is time to go down.
The chain gun seems great for anti-personnel operations but yeah it is worthless against enemy titans. I'll try the tank load-out.
Do you know if at some point you can customize your titan load-outs the way you can customize your class load-out?
