As a die hard Linux user, I find this thread amusing in a wide variety of ways. CLI for the win.

Exactly.

I used to be a die-hard mouse user. Until I discovered the wonders of keyboard shortcuts. It has made my life SSOO much easier. Especially with my job in IT. There are so many things that are easier to launch by hitting "Windows + keystroke" It has increased my productivity so much. Like just hitting "Windows + R" then type "calc" and hit enter to launch the calculator. Or dozens of other quick things like that.

That's where the Mac really shines. I can literally type "Files I worked on last Tuesday" and it will pull up the related files for me. Between this, and the 'swipe' gestures for switching between apps/desktops, I may never want to use a PC again.

I find that I fat-finger things way to often for this to be terribly effective. I never learned much of the keyboarding shortcuts in StarCraft for this reason - which meant I was a bit limited in how well I could do. I can't stand swipe-type interfaces, and I've come to the conclusion that I simply need a bigger phone because everything on the screen is too small for me. I have to disable things like autocorrect and swipe-like features or I am ready to hit the piece of electronics with a sledgehammer in less than 5 minutes.

I literally almost did that with my first smartphone, it was so frustrating.

I have given some thought to this, since I have mostly heard good things from Linux users but I don't know that I really want to deal with the potential compatibility issues, or learn a new operating system from the ground up - or *shudder* have to teach it to my wife.

There are times to use a mouse and times to use a keyboard. Keyboard short cuts are generally faster in Windows than the mouse, especially when you are searching for some menu nested functions. Command line Interfaces are application specific and require time and effort to master. As for learning Linux, you can make a portable Linux OS out of a flash drive or even a live CD to learn the OS. I recommend the Ubuntu family of distributions for first time users. You'll find that its not that difficult.

In time, you will all be ready for regular expressions.

I have a love/hate relationship with RegEx. I love what it can do, but hate how long it still takes me to produce the desired results and how ugly my finalized expressions often look.
Example : ([LMNOP]:(?:(?!(\\Output\\|\\Completed\\|\\Failed\\))[^,])+?\.(txt|pgp)|[QR]:\\[0-9]+?\\(?:(?!(Complete\\|.rsp|.rtn))[^,])+?\.pgp)

Also, this:

I've been delaying the upgrade myself. I've been happy with 8.1 so far. I would have already made the jump, but I am fearing that some of my items will not make the move. I have a steelseries merc keyboard that works with gaming software to control it's gamepad. I've read others saying that some of this isn't working with Win10. I also have a logitech 602 wireless mouse, which also uses gaming software for it's extra buttons, and I have read the same thing with it.

Maybe they will fix these issues, but until I know for sure I will just keep delaying the move. My mouse and keyboard are vital to playing WoW, which is one of the major reasons I compute.

Might want to do a little research on how to keep your computer off the "automatically upgrade without user consent" list.

Taamar woke up her computer a few days ago to find that it had been upgraded to Win10 in the wee hours of the morning, without her having been consulted on the matter. Also, sadly, she's been having problems with her computer ever since. I strongly suspect that's because it's a Lenovo all-in-one and has proprietary software and/or drivers that didn't survive the upgrade, but haven't actually dug into it to verify.

edit : adding link to story on computerworld.com - Microsoft pushes Windows 10 upgrade to PCs without user consent

Did the update and everything seems to be working well. Turned off just about everything in the set up, since I have no need for most every new thing offered. It seems to actually run a bit better than win8.1 was doing, so maybe this will be a good thing.

Yeah, I was cautious at first about Win10, and expected I'd be rolling it back shortly, but so far it's been great.
