Ahh, yes. "I don't put myself in positions where I could be accused of inappropriate behavior. This is deeply sexist because it denies leftists the opportunity to make such accusations." Truly, he bears the mark of Satan for not hanging around with other women.

I really didn't understand the rage over this.

It's simple. A Republican politician, by adhering to a course of action based on his religious views, is insulating himself against allegations of scandal that could come from behavior contradictory to those same views. This denies the left the opportunity to call him a hypocrite and neutralize him with a scandal, therefore it's bad. It's really quite elegant - if he does hang out with other women, he's a hypocritical misogynistic pig who sees women as sex objects, while if he doesn't... he's a hypocritical misogynistic pig who sees women as sex objects.

Also, when Pence holds himself to a standard of behavior regarding women, that's obviously the same as making women dress in burquas because reasons.

Actually, I think it's similar to complaints like when CEOs golf with some male employees, but not female ones - the female employees lose out on mentoring, networking, and informal "face time" that can advance their careers.

The complaint has been couched in similar terms, but one is far less likely to be accused of engaging in inappropriate behavior (regardless of the accuracy of the accusation) on a golf course in broad daylight.

True. But it'd be nice to assume people would behave in professional ways. :)

It would be even nicer if we did not rely on "networking" and "mentoring" rather than actual performance. I would much rather be evaluated on my abilities than my willingness to trudge around a golf course engaging in a sport I can't stand, but I don't get to complain about "sexism", and "golfism" really isn't a thing.

I have occasionally pointed out that ice hockey might make a nice substitute since it's a team sport and involve the possibility of knocking someone on their ***, but bosses still prefer grass hockey for some reason.

Its actually this. That and apparently his urges are so uncontrollable that he can't conduct business with 51% of the population without a chaperone.

It's not his own urges he's worried about. It's your urges.

That's strange, because the whole reason he won't spend time with women other than his wife is the inclination of people like you to try to **** him. Every time his name comes up, your boner is practically visible through the internet.

What causes the rage is not so much one person's personal choice to do this, but the associated implication that it's inherently disrespectful for *any* married person to do this, and the resulting effects. (For example, it basically prohibits people from having opposite-sex friends) This "rule" is named after a famous singer whose name escapes me at the moment, but he promoted this sentiment extensively.

It doesn't prohibit anyone from doing anything. He isn't proposing making this the law or something.

As for the idea that it "implies" that other people without that standard are doing something wrong, any personally held moral standard necessarily implies that the person holding it thinks that contradictory behavior is wrong. Getting riled up over this implication means either "no one wshould hold any moral standard for any reason because it might imply they disagree with someone else" - or else "no one should hold any moral standard I disagree with, because they might imply I'm wrong, but it's perfectly ok for me to disapprove of them... holding a moral standard."

Well, yes, but it's far more reasonable to **** on Pence for having such a universal moral belief than it would be if his only reason for doing it was to protect himself from accusations.

I don't understand why having female friends requires being alone with them. I also am never alone behind closed doors with a woman other than my wife. I have plenty of friends that are not this way and I don't disparage them for it. I do it because I love my wife and one way I choose to show that is by conducting myself in a way that won't put her trust at risk. I also don't drink alcohol (no, not for religious reasons) and spend plenty of time in the company of people drinking.

In Pence's case, he's a politician. Any mentoring or whatever else is being denied to women (if that's really their beef) can happen in public places in full view of everybody else. There is also no reason it cannot happen with another person present. I don't see why he's accused of being a piece of crap for wanting to remain above suspicion, especially in an area where the only evidence of wrongdoing is based on hearsay regarding private, one-on-one meetings.

It's really just about finding a reason to find fault with Pence.

Pence isn't (solely) talking about being alone with women in private. His stance is that he can't do anything alone with a woman, even if it's in public, like having dinner in a restaurant.

Like, I don't think you remember a lot of the commentary that was going on when this was in the news. People were relating anecdotes that were just pathologically ridiculous and then declaring men had a moral obligation to adhere to this "rule" even in such situations. One of my favorite ones was like one guy that hired an electrician to come do some work at his house, and then, assuming the electrician would be male, his wife went to run some errands. When a woman showed up, this guy had to tell her sorry, you can't come in here and do the scheduled work because I'm alone and you have two X chromosomes. And he was talking about how proud he was of this decision.

It's not OK to criticize people for having moral stances you disagree with?
