Paladin tanking is ezmode.
On an unrelated note, was running normal HoR on my mage. We kill the first boss, and the tanking cloak drops. The DK tank needs, and so does the DPS warrior. The warrior wins, claims he needs it for his offspec, and the tank quits just as wave 6 spawns. We wipe, and the other party members start yelling at the warrior. He claims innocence saying he has a right to the cloak to for his offspec. The group falls apart, and as I'm sitting in Dalaran in the queue again, I decide to check his armory. He doesn't HAVE an offspec. **** greedy ninjalooting bastards.
Kindly add this shitstain to the failmory, Mook.
See, I have a problem with this from 2 standpoints. On the one hand, I really don't see that the tank should be entitled to tank gear as a matter of course, mainly because like I said before A) tanks don't usually refrain from rolling on DPS gear (I haven't really checked on healers yet) B) people "need" on stuff for their "spec" that's inferior to what they have as someone else pointed out C) people do legitimately have offspecs they need gear for, and D) I object to "accepted practices" of the playerbase because people start treating them as Holy Writ, which facilities B) above.
On the other hand, the practice has its merits as well because of incidents like this *** rolling for his nonexistant offspec. If the tank has only a single spec (which in itself I find bizarre at 80) then he gets dicked on stuff like this since he may be competing against as many as 4 other people, depending if it's a typed armor (plate, mail, etc.) and the class breakdown.
The bottom line I think is that you can't be afriad to stand up for yourself when rolling for fear of offending some loot whore, but you shouldn't be greedy either.
Last night I did the Arena heroic, and that tanking trinket that boosts armor by like 7000 on hits dropped. I wasn't going to roll on it against the tank but then I saw that the healer (paladin) needed on it.
Maybe he's just being a dick, but if he wins I guarantee he's not going to give it over to the tank and we both get dicked. I ended up winning it. (To be perfectly honest, I don't even know if the tank needed; I only saw the healer roll) Maybe I should have given it up, but I figure I'm out of the running now for future rolls. I have managed to get a few more tankworthy pieces together so I'm probably going to start queing as tank for my nonheroics.
In your case above, by the way, your tank was as big an *** as the warrior; maybe bigger. He dicked over 3 other people because of a 4th persons *** move.
