holy crap; For years Fear Factory has always ranked as one of my favorite bands. Their last few albums have been commercial radio crap imo. Their newest album was recently released... and as a metal album, it would be worthy of moshing to, i present my current 2 favorite tunes...

Quote:
My Back Pages
Crimson flames tied through my ears
Rollin’ high and mighty traps
Pounced with fire on flaming roads
Using ideas as my maps
“We’ll meet on edges, soon,” said I
Proud ’neath heated brow.
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now.

Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth
“Rip down all hate,” I screamed
Lies that life is black and white
Spoke from my skull. I dreamed
Romantic facts of musketeers
Foundationed deep, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now.

Girls’ faces formed the forward path
From phony jealousy
To memorizing politics
Of ancient history
Flung down by corpse evangelists
Unthought of, though, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now.

A self-ordained professor’s tongue
Too serious to fool
Spouted out that liberty
Is just equality in school
“Equality,” I spoke the word
As if a wedding vow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I’m younger than that now.

In a soldier’s stance, I aimed my hand
At the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not that I’d become my enemy
In the instant that I preach
My pathway led by confusion boats
Mutiny from stern to bow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I’m younger than that now.

Yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats
Too noble to neglect
Deceived me into thinking
I had something to protect
Good and bad, I define these terms
Quite clear, no doubt, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I’m younger than that now.

"Held"---Natalie Grant

Great song but it depresses the **** outta me.

Quote:
Two months is too little
They let him go
They had no sudden healing
To think that providence
Would take a child from his mother
While she prays, is appalling
Who told us we'd be rescued
What has changed and
Why should we be saved from nightmares
We're asking why this happens to us
Who have died to live, it's unfair

[Chorus]
This is what it means to be held
How it feels, when the sacred is torn from your life
And you survive
This is what it is to be loved and to know
That the promise was when everything fell
We'd be held

This hand is bitterness
We want to taste it and
Let the hatred numb our sorrows
The wise hand opens slowly
To lilies of the valley and tomorrow

[Chorus]
This is what it means to be held
How it feels, when the sacred is torn from your life
And you survive
This is what it is to be loved and to know
That the promise was when everything fell
We'd be held
[Bridge]
If hope is born of suffering
If this is only the beginning
Can we not wait, for one hour
Watching for our savior
[Chorus]
This is what it means to be held
How it feels, when the sacred is torn from your life
And you survive
This is what it is to be loved and to know
That the promise was when everything fell
We'd be held
We'd be held

This is what it is to be loved and to know
That the promise was when everything fell
We'd be held

This is what it means to be held.....

you know.. looking through this thread, really looking at the music contained in here... we all put a bunch of crap on here. Myself included obviously.

It may be good right now, but which ones if any of the music in this thread will be remembered 400+ years from now?

None of the music of today has the staying power of Vivaldi, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Wagner, Strauss, etc.

And it would not surprise me if in 400+ years they still know who these greats are, but Bob Dylan, Fear Factory, Bob Marley, Cradle of Filth, Grateful Dead, Metallica, Neil Young, Marilyn Manson, Maynard, hell even Les Claypool will be nothing but a forgotten thing, with no one mourning its loss.

Or... humanity could go the way of Idiocracy/Demolition Man and the Oscar Mayer weiner jingle could become the national anthem.

Some of the comments on youtube make me sad. "I thought this was made for a Vietnam movie?" I hope the person who said that gets hit by a bus full of... explosives...

And I fail at the internet cause I can't embed youtube. I'll go perform harikari, excuse me.

The OP was favorite of the moment, not lasting legacy. Doesn't something ever just hit for a few weeks? My favorite classical piece is "Canon" by Pachelbel

Oh I realize it was favorite of the moment. I have contributed several times, but when thinking of my own mortality as I often do; it leads me to think of the things that may survive for centuries. And sadly.. I do not see "Don't you eat that yellow snow" as being as popular in 200 years as Ode to Joy.

I also enjoy Canon... but this guy doesn't...

My favorite song Sunday. Pretty boring/standard but eh, stuck with me. :p This is supposedly just a "video teaser" but the song is about 2:15 in duration here, and the full song is 3:40, so you're still getting most. If you're actually interested, the band's MySpace page is pretty good http://www.myspace.com/violetnine and has a bunch of their full songs.

Yesterday's favorite song. I'm not really sure how to describe it. Funky... slingy... somefin... (note: video is from a game Audiosurf. I think this is the best/clearest version on YouTube though. Audiosurf is pretty cool anyway :p)

I have a new song of the day almost every day... and I'm sure all my buddies hate me linking them random songs so often. :p

Darksiege:

I'm not so sure about all that.

Keep in mind, what we consider "classical music" now was scrutinized and criticized in its time, just like we do today's music. Also just like today, there were classical pieces that didn't make it, one-hit wonders, and even masterpieces that we now consider staples of music, but were simply "okay" or even flops to the people back then.

Two-three hundred + years from now, there's simply no way we can know what will last and what won't.

For all we know Lady Gaga may be considered the Beethoven of the future.

Music used to be less... background music. In ye olde times, you had to go to a concert or play an instrument right? When was the victrola invented? Now, people listen to music constantly, even more so with the advent of mp3 players like the ipod. I'm not sure a direct comparison is accurate. Though, I always assume there were "one-hit-wonder" of the classical era, but I would think one would have to be fairly well off financially to get into that stuff back then. I don't really know much about what it was like... I'm kind of curious now. Art history majors anywhere?

I may have posted this previously, but it makes the rounds through my playlist every few months. It's very ear wormy (for me anyway).

This is Paul Brady's live version of the traditional Irish (Scottish?) tune 'Arthur McBride and the Sergeant' recorded on Irish Television in 1977.
I had to look up some of the words here (Shillelegh? Hod? Clouts?) to be sure of their meanings.

(The audio quality on this isn't the greatest. Apparently the guy who posted it recorded it directly to VHS when it was broadcast on local television in Ireland. The audio compression is pretty bad. This is the only known copy of this recording, except his original tape of course - and the one I stashed on my hard drive :p )

Hey, any song about clubbing recruiters with a Shillelegh is a-ok in my book! ;)

Feel free to sing along if it suits you. :p

Paul Brady wrote:
Oh, me and my cousin, one Arthur McBride
As we went a-walking down by the seaside
Now, mark what followed and what did betide
For it being on Christmas morning...
Out for recreation, we went on a tramp
And we met Sergeant Napper and Corporal Vamp
And a little wee drummer, intending to camp
For the day being pleasant and charming.

"Good morning ! Good morning!" the sergeant did cry
"And the same to you gentlemen!" we did reply ,
Intending no harm but meant to pass by
For it being on Christmas morning.
But says he, "My fine fellows if you will enlist,
It's ten guineas in gold I will slip in your fist
And a crown in the bargain for to kick up the dust
And drink the King's health in the morning.

For a soldier he leads a very fine life
And he always is blessed with a charming young wife
And he pays all his debts without sorrow or strife
And always lives pleasant and charming...
And a soldier he always is decent and clean
In the finest of clothing he's constantly seen
While other poor fellows go dirty and mean
And sup on thin gruel in the morning."

"But", says Arthur, "I wouldn't be proud of your clothes
For you've only the lend of them as I suppose
And you dare not change them one night, for you know
If you do you'll be flogged in the morning.

And although that we are single and free
we take great delight in our own company
And we have no desire strange faces to see
Although that your offers are charming
And we have no desire to take your advance
All hazards and dangers we barter on chance
For you would have no scruples for to send us to France
Where we would get shot without warning"

"Oh now!", says the sergeant "I'll have no such chat
And I neither will take it from spalpeen or brat
For if you insult me with one other word
I'll cut off your heads in the morning"
And then Arthur and I we soon drew our hods
And we scarce gave them time for to draw their own blades
When a trusty shillelagh came over their heads
And bade them take that as fair warning

And their old rusty rapiers that hung by their side
We flung them as far as we could in the tide
"Now take them out, Divils!", cried Arthur McBride
"And temper their edge in the morning".
And the little wee drummer we flattened his pow
And we made a football of his rowdeydowdow
Threw it in the tide for to rock and to row
And bade it a tedious returning

And we having no money, paid them off in cracks
And we paid no respect to their two bloody backs
For we lathered them there like a pair of wet sacks
And left them for dead in the morning.
And so to conclude and to finish disputes
We obligingly asked if they wanted recruits
For we were the lads who would give them hard clouts
And bid them look sharp in the morning.

Oh me and my cousin, one Arthur McBride
As we went a walkin' down by the seaside,
Now mark what followed and what did betide
For it being on Christmas morning

Completely had forgotten about this song, but another song kinda triggered the memory of it buried deep. I can't get it out of my head. And I like it.
