Please re-read what I wrote and try to defend your suggestion that I implied such a thing.
Seriously... knowing that something is a likelihood and taking steps to avoid it doesn't mean the thing is OK. For example: as a woman I know that walking in bad areas for town while showing expensive items is a bad idea, so I don't do it. That doesn't mean muggings are acceptable, and it doesn't mean victims are responsible for what happened... but it does mean that they could have been more vigilant and shouldn't be terribly surprised by the outcome.
So,... my precise position is "This sucks, but you're surprised?" with a side order of 'You thread got ugly because it was treated with the same respect everything around here is: none. This isn't about being a poor persecuted Christian, it's how this place is. "
While its perfectly clear that you didn't say that it's acceptable to insult people in General based ont heir religion as Bery implied, the last line is sheer nonsense.
It isn't how "everything" gets treated, unless that "everything" is in Hellfire, or to a lesser degree Heckfire and Rants. When we've seen religious threads having to do with whatevr holidays you celebrate, no one has felt it necessary to come in and make cnotty comments. In fact, no one even felt it necessary to do it in "prayers for Rhode Island", since htat's fairly generic, not Christian-specific.
However, when we get a thread specifically about a major Christian holiday, people think that's a license to come in and start turning it into a discussion of how they don't like the way other people teach their children religious views or making jokes that amount to "Look how cool I am for not believing!"
In fact, if someone were to come in and do the same thing in one of your threads, the same people who are saying everyone should lighten up would be dogpiling on whoever did it (rightly) AND using it as an excuse to generalize that behavior to all other Christians, probably even if the person who did it wasn't one.
So yes, to a large degree it is about the fact that there are a few people here who think every thread that mentions Christianity means they need to get their shots in due to their personal issues with it. It even happens in
bona fide discussion threads; any passing mention of Christianity much less a serious discussion of it is interspresed with what amounts to pointless drivel by people who need to drop some poison in the well at every opportunity.
