Off-color or blasphemous jokes are not insulting a religion. Hell, the joke itself wasn't even insulting to Jesus. It was a play on the words "He is risen."

Let's take a poll and see how many people got that, as opposed to how many thought you were mocking the messiah of Christianity and thereby insulting them personally considering the preeminence of Christianity in their lives.

This would be more akin to coming into the thread with a joke about Muhammed taking a dump. Which would not be considered a flame.

That's not what I'm saying at all. I think her comment was in poor taste, and unnecessary in general.

However, that being said, it was not a declaration of unholy war on all things Jesusy as several here are taking it as. I didn't find it particularly funny, but nor did I find it as particularly awful. Certainly not as bad as to cause this level of animosity.

People here say stupid **** all the time. Hell, I should know, I'm one of the biggest **** talkers on the board as is evidenced by my post count. Yes, what she said was stupid, yes it was inconsiderate. No, it wasn't against the board rules as written.

Besides, since when has "mod" been anything more than a community crossing guard? I know you're still bitter over the You and Taskiss thing that caused the splintering of Hellfire a while back. That's neither here nor there though. Personally, I have never held the mods to any standard above a regular poster. I don't particularly care what they do or do not enforce. I've been warned a couple of times, probably reported more than a few.

At the end of the day though, I come here for entertainment, community and sharing like interests with like-minded people. We're all fairly different, and we all have fairly different perspectives on some things. In that is our community strength. Getting overly butthurt over a perceived injustice or infraction isn't conducive to any of those things. There's no real reason for any of it IMO.

Ask yourself, "Why am I here". If you can answer that "Because I have fun hanging out here, and I see it as a positive part of my day to post"... you're probably here for the same reason I am. We're all people.

Seeing as taly has reverted back to queen ***** who doesn't care about the rules she helped create, can we get her removed as mod now? I think it would be best for the board as a whole.

Again... what rules were violated?

We keep coming back to this.

Perhaps you're right though. She's too polarizing a figure to mod effectively perhaps.

Up to Dash and Mook really. Perhaps PMs to them would work best.

False equivalence.

On the primary holiday of a particular religion, you made fun of that religion's messiah by mocking his death.

Now, I think it's ironic that that is found offensive considering his death is supposed to be the salvation of all his subsequent followers, but that irony doesn't change the fact that a very large portion of this forum appears to have been offended, insulted, or flamed by that mocking. It's merely to your convenience that you get to make up the interpretation of the rules as you go along, rather than actually following them, or following the spirit of them as explicitly stated in the rules themself.

An equivalent joke could be (don't know much about Islam) to make some sort of wisecrack about swine rising from the rock or something on the day that Muhammed ascended. I used "durka durka ****" for illustrative purposes only to refute TheRiov's spurious and fallacious logic.

About 2-4 bullets within the Flaming Section of the Glade Posting Guidelines. Mentioned by me and explicitly laid out by Kaffis.

Any poster that openly attacks, insults, belittles, or abuses another poster will receive a warning or further disciplinary action. You can be critical of another poster's viewpoint in a debate, even going as far as to explain why you believe them to be mistaken and backing your points up with sources as appropriate, but the moment your criticism extends to the person who posted that viewpoint, it has crossed the line.

Specific things you cannot do on this message board:
...
Use passive-aggressive insults, such as "Anyone who believes that is an idiot," ... It's still not allowed.
Harassment of other posters, such as repeatedly following them from thread to thread to dispute them, personally.
Responding in kind to a poster who has flamed you. Please inform a Moderator via PM. Remember, the more they flame, the deeper a hole they dig for themselves, but don’t spur them on.
Belittling people for having different viewpoints than yourself.
...
Posting insults or slurs based on anyone's race, religion, ethnicity, age, gender, or sexual orientation
...

There is some wiggle-room here. ... Once again, these are guidelines. Use common sense and think about the spirit, rather than the letter of the law. If a post looks like its primary (or only) purpose is to cause strife, or is intended to "bait" flames, it can fall under this as well, at the discretion of the moderators.

The *only* possible infraction *I* see is the flame bait one. Even that's weak at best.

It didn't insult anyone, either directly or passive-aggressively. It didn't belittle anyone for having different viewpoints, had nothing to do with any posters directly, there were no responses in kind that I saw until the thread was moved to HF then locked.

The worst it was was in poor taste. Seriously.

And yet a number of the people here have found it that insulting. That's why moderators exist, to moderate between people who think something is a violation and people who don't. When a moderator themself is part of the problem, that only exacerbates things.

Yes, we all say stupid stuff from time to time. Yes, it was against the rules.

See my point above about Mods exacerbating problems. This is why they should be on better behavior than your everyday poster, because once they're involved in a dispute personally it creates additional problems.

Actually, you don't know ****. What I'm bitter about is the fact that Dash has let the place go to ****, doesn't care, and doesn't want to have to care. Well tough **** titty for him, because he took on the mantle of administrator. Being a passive **** does not coincide with that very well at all.

There's no reason to piss on people either, Mus. And while you and Talya and some other people may be nihilistic or nearly so, most of society actually cares about certain things. We have rules to protect community members from insults about those things they care about.

That didn't come until what page 10 in this thread?

I'm talking about the original posts that caused the strife. Anything beyond that, in Hellfire isn't covered.

She made the comment, you tweaked her on it, she clarified, and all hell broke loose. At least, that's how I read the series of events.

I don't have a dog in this race though, I'm just trying to get people to see rationality amidst the chaos.

You know what, you're actually correct about this. It really wasn't all THAT insulting, in and of itself. In fact, it was barely noticeable on the "insulting" scale, mainly due to it's sheer silliness.

What was insulting was the fact that, (not unlike a teenager) you had to stick your nose into the Easter thread (Bery's douchebaggery notwithstanding) and do it THERE. All this bullshit about how awful you think it is to show respect for opinions you don't like, and despite the attempt to compare yourself to Carlin (who was a **** anyhow) is really just an attempt to justify the antics we'd normally expect of a 13-year-old boy.

As someone else asked, do you poke your head into actual churches and do this sort of thing? No? Probably because sooner or later you might get your *** kicked because regardless of the merits or lack thereof of your "joke" (which was not really terribly funny, clever, or creative) sticking your nose in somewhere and disrupting things is just an ******* thing to do, and then telling people to lighten up or trying to aggrandize your own cleverness later is just a smoke screen for poor social behavior.

Really what you did was no different than the kids that occasionally ride by my wife and I in the park and yell "NICE TITS!!" at her, and just about as clever. What's hilarious to them isn't my wife's tits, it's the fact that they're juveniles on bikes and I'm an adult on foot, so I really can't do much of anything about it, much like you can be pretty much assured no one is going to actually do anything about your asshattery here on the board.

As for "not caring if you offend anyone", that seems unlikely as well. You do care. You really WANT people to be insulted, just so that you can then make a big deal out of them being insulted. In that regard, pretty much all of us are guilty of taking the bait. Then you can chortle to yourself about how you got people all riled up. It's not because we "need it" or "it's a good thing" because you're far too intelligent to think snotty comments are going to change the minds of the equally intelligent Christians. It's about satisfying your own personal issues with religion, especially Christianity.

This smacks of misconception. We have rules to protect community members from insults, yes. But not from offense. There is a difference. What I said was obviously offensive to some people. It was not an insult (either direct or passive agressive) to any of them, nor to their religion.

Amazing then that so many people took it as a direct insult.

Are all those people mental midgets? Or are you and Talya and TheRiov just that more enlightened than all of them?

I mean, Lenas clearly saw something amiss with the original thread. After all, he issued a blanket statement and then moved it. Why do that if all it is is in poor taste?

They clearly disagreed.

Which is why we have moderators, to mediate disputes over rules. Same reason we have law or government, really.

When the moderator, or government, is part of the problem, as in this case, it gets heated, complicated, and drives people away.

Yes. They may not be so naturally, but they choose to be when it comes to some things. They're ultimately no different than the Muslims screaming for the heads of a cartoonist who drew the image of Muhammed. (And, funny or not, I seem to recall many of you, like me, applauded the cartoonist.)

Arafys, things don't exist in a vacuum. What she posted on "page 10 in this thread" was just her finally declaring openly, after all this time, that she feels it is a duty to do such things.

True, there's not. A little civility goes a long way. I restrain myself all the time on here. Yes. They may not be so naturally, but they choose to be when it comes to some things. They're ultimately no different than the Muslims screaming for the heads of a cartoonist who drew the image of Muhammed. (And, funny or not, I seem to recall many of you, like me, applauded the cartoonist.)

No one's screaming for your head. If all the Muslims had said is "That Cartoonist is an *******! ALLAHU ACKBAR!!" we'd never have had those conversations.
