Name one country that doesn't do this. It's also really hard to tell when public debt becomes a "problem." Greece fell apart at government debt just over 100% of GDP, yet Japan is going to push its public debt over 200% of GDP this year and they're still chugging along.

Appeal to popularity is all you have. Stop defending immoral action simply because it is common.
