While reading about the shootings in Cumbria in which five ack, twelve people died, I came across this quote:
Quote:
The lad that's been killed was friends with him. They used to stand together having a craic on the rank.

Really, this is just my chance to use the "two peoples separated by a common language" quote. But, seriously, what's a craic? I can get "rank" - I think they were both taxi drivers, so maybe the rank is where the taxis park while waiting ... but, a craic? Where's Sui when we need him?!

(And, please take any hellfire-type comments about gun control and massacres to the appropriate forum, thanks!)

Craic 297 up, 70 down
Irish word, refers to good times, as well as scandal/gossip/goings on. No real English equivalent.
Last night was great craic!

According to the Wiki, Arafys is right and in this case a craic is Irish for "an enjoyable conversation."

So, not really an English to English translation.

I already knew what craic meant. This thread boosts my ego. You guys need to be better socialized so that you learn all the slang.

OK, points only go to Lex for knowing it without looking up. Heck, I coulda looked it up, but it's more fun to ask you folks!

Funny, though, must have been an Irish taxi driver. This definitely happened in England.
