I just quit my facebook account. Defriended everyone, removed all pictures, tags, set everything to friends only privacy (equals zero) and deactivated the account.

This is what I replied with in the "reason for leaving" comment box. Wow, I didn't know I would be given a post-facebook interview.

Quote:
Facebook is a good concept, which is why I'm taking the time to write this reply, but the people ruin it. The few people that I actually hang out in real life, I actually hang out with...in real....life. Too many people use Facebook as a replacement for their social life...people fall into a few groups...either they post funny quotes / links, complain about some aspect of their life or other people, or they post uninteresting stuff....and if they were my actual friend, stuff I would already know. It's almost like an attention whoring popularity contest. I'd explain further, but I'm really getting tired of spending any more time on this good idea of a website which has now turned into a complete cesspool of stupidity and pointlessness. For 3 years my sister talked me into getting a Facebook account and I refused. I finally did get a facebook account, and I saw how cool of a site it could be...then I realized I was right in the first place. Just watch the South Park facebook episode for further explanation. Adios, Facebook. I wonder how many years this site will last, as far as being profitable from advertisement and affiliates which also add more pointless garbage to the website...actually..I bet it will last forever, because as the great Einstein said... "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."

Long story short...if people want to know me, they already know me or will know me in the future. Peace out :)

Yeah...someone said something to me that was completely out of line...she was a facebook stalker. Used that topic to bring up something very personal about me in front of her entire family while I was in a car with them. There was about 30 seconds of awkward silence...and I had to break the damn silence, but I kept going on with what I was saying, completely ignoring the comment, even though it was clear it had really offended me. They dropped me off, I got outta the car, said have a good 4th. No, this wasn't even a girlfriend. Haha. Wow...it's weird when someone you've met for the 2nd time in a one and a half year timespan knows more about you than you do and tells you how to live your life. Oh, and also coworkers getting into your personal life. I mean, when you work a night shift, it's nice to have friends that are on your schedule, so you just naturally become friends and develop relationships, etc. This type of **** and real life doesn't mix. At all.

Facebook is way too public, yet too impersonal.

I felt bad de-friending some people, but those people are my real friends and will understand.

its been a good icebreaker for me. I've actually made some friends at work because people learned a little bit about me from FB and then decided to get to know me better IRL. Even got me a date or two.

I can get them without using the Internet... got two this week. Online dating isn't worth it because it's just not cool... if I marry a girl I don't want to tell people we met online.

My current g/f randomly hit me up on FB for a date (she's a friend of a friend, not a weirdo stalker).

That's fine IMO since there is an initial real life connection. That's just called meeting someone through a friend, and the Internet happens to be the medium.

Instead of "I picked my date up off the street" ROTFL. Rest assured I have lots of faith you'll never be married.

Meeting girls in person is much cooler than using the Internet. You get a story about how you met, etc. Also it's much more efficient once you have the social skills.

its even cooler once you realize that how 'cool' something is, really doesnt matter. Who cares what other people think about how you met?

That's like saying being in a cubicle is as cool as sailing in a yacht in the Mediterranean... some things are cooler than others. Meeting a girl in person is more of an adventure than being a keyboard jockey.

Those who know others are intelligent.
Those who know themselves have insight.
Those who master others have force.
Those who master themselves have strength.

I created a facebook account just so I could get inside the wall and view some other interesting profiles (some guitar builders, etc...), but my profile is set to private, I have never friended anyone, and have posted nothing about myself, and fully intend to keep it that way.

I do the same with Twitter. I have an account, and do 'follow' some interesting accounts via SMS, but I have only tweeted a few times, just when I first set it up.

I have no interest in socializing in this way. It seems very creepy to me. I guess I'm just old fashioned.

It's nice to keep up with old friends.

Originally, facebook was awesome on college campuses.

You know, back when it was restricted to the university you went to, and you HAD to have a valid .edu e-mail address to join.

Back then it was an excellent way to network, remember the names of the people in your classes that you forgot, etc.

Also because back then it actually let you upload your class schedule, and matched you with people based on that.

And had discussion forums for each of the courses.

Yea, that's when I signed up. After college I've barely utilized it, and don't really like it much either.

I just use it now mostly to swap pictures with family, and because a lot of my friends communicate through no other venue these days.

They don't e-mail, they don't do phone calls, etc.

It also reminds me of peoples birthdays!

My cousin, whom I never thought needed the internet to meet people, met her husband online.

She is a beautiful woman, but for whatever reason, she attempted to make a connection online.

She is now happily married to a radiologist and has three beautiful kids.

Sux that she says that she met her hubby online, right?

I'd rather say I met someone on-line than I met them at a bar when we were both drunk on our asses, or at a strip club, etc.

Pretty much a honorable way to meet, in my opinion, seeing's how one's faculties aren't impaired at the time.
