Because when I'm not gaming, my computer is a multitasking machine. I switch between tabs, between windows, between programs, and back (in which case referring to the title bar is quite handy if I was viewing several similar-looking pages like forum threads), which makes having corners of other windows (like IM clients), desktop shortcuts, taskbars, quicklaunch icons, widgets, and the Start Menu handy makes perfect sense.

I haven't habitually full-screened (or even maximized everything since I got a 19" screen over a decade ago. Webpage design hasn't kept up with display resolutions (nor should it try, due to the diverse range of web platforms used today, from laptops to mobile devices to desktops with a wide range of resolutions...), so it's not like my 2/3s of the screen real estate browser window is a worse or less efficient browsing experience.

Most websites (not common on forums, which are usually fluid) employ a maximum width of 950 pixels. To show any more than that is purely aesthetic and unnecessary.

This. And there's a good reason why this is done. It's the same reason that people don't sell books that are 22+ inches wide with a 16:9 ratio. In a horizontally written language, it makes things harder to read. Long line lengths are a definite usability problem, and should be avoided.

Now if monitors were 9:16 instead of 16:9, it might actually make some sense to fullscreen your browser. But as is, the vast majority of content is 90 degrees to your monitor's aspect ratio, so fullscreening is giving you very little actual gain in real-estate.

Ok, I voted for chrome, but the reality is a little more complicated than that. I use chrome almost exclusively on my linux computers. On Windows, I'm a bit more paranoid and stick to Firefox solely for the advantage of having NoScript. Also, if I'm ever really having to get my hands dirty, it's Firefox or bust.

Chrome is just so damn nimble, though. And it has a refreshingly minimalist GUI. That makes it very hard for me to resist.

Voted Firefox, although I am trying out this Chrome thingumy.

IE is not as bad as people say, I just think it's too memory-intensive for a browser.

I feel the need to use this thread as an opportunity to gripe a bit... I run Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit with 4Gb RAM on a dual core AMD processor. (Dell Inspiron 1546)

I keep my Antivirus and my Malwarebytes up to date... I keep windows updates all current... but IE is now basically a useless lump of crap on my computer. It takes forever to open, and when it does open a simple google default page (not even signed in to my google account) takes several seconds to load.

Chrome is almost instant for opening and my home page (signed in to my google account) loads right away.

I am not a microsoft hater, but WTF.. this is f***tarded.

IE (until 9 comes out) is a piece of ****, man.

You can actually uninstall it in Windows 7. Perhaps you should do so.

What advantage(s)/improvement(s) is IE 9 going to offer?

HTML5/CSS3 support (currently the fastest HTML5 rendering browser, actually), a new Javascript engine, and DirectX video acceleration to name a few.

Nice. Sounds like it will be tiger fast.

Chrome have noscript yet? Because I might switch over when it does. But when I tried it, it didn't have it, so I refuse to use it until it is included.

I usually use Firefox and Chrome about equally. Chrome is generally preferred, but I have had issues with it too. Probably related to browser settings as NephyrS suspects for himself, but there you go. I also haven't found all the extensions to match Firefox, though perhaps that's just on me. Chrome gives me weird memory issues too. An update fixed one bad memory leak, but there's something funny going on, I think related to Flash (it's crashing every now and then on me in Chrome).

But my computer is nearly 4 years old and in desperate need of a reformat, so I don't imagine I have the most fair operating situation to compare them. :p

Chrome, and IE for Sharepoint sites that I have to use for work.

Chrome 99.9% of the time.
