Surprisingly accurate on a subconscious level as well.

See...I think most women do that kind of stuff to impress other women. It goes along with designer handbags, a closet full of shoes and all that kind of stuff. Guys don't care about any of that.

You're right, really, but women do it thinking it will impress men even though it doesn't. Same thing with a lot of things guys do, like aftermarket stuff on their cars and creative facial hair. Seems to me that a lot of the thing we do to impress the opposite gender are really things to impress our own gender with our superior opposite-gender-getting skills.

This gal doesn't care about any of that stuff either. My hubby cuts my hair to the length I want and I do the trimming for bangs or whatever. Shoes, I have a closet full from when I worked in an office...I don't wear them any more...handbags I have two, dark brown for everyday and a black patent/suede for dressier occasions.

Guess I'm kind of a square peg trying to fit into a round hole...or something. I'm just me...take me or leave me! :D

Heh, same here, I hate the beach. My wife loves it, of course. :D I dig on the ocean, though, and turn into Mr. Amateur Biologist when we do go.

So many of those other things, too - cars, social media (Facebook), clubbing, most sports - I indulge a love of baseball, and start paying attention to football 'round about Hallowe'en.

Hopwin, that music video is also the first thing that popped into my head when the word "baller" appeared on my screen.

Things that I am not into that most others are:

Sports - yeah, ditto for me. If, *IF*, I was going to ever get into watching sports it would likely be a women's sport. Sweaty, grunting men huddling up, slamming into each other, and slapping each other's butts doesn't sound like something I could sit and watch for 3 hours. But, if you're into that.... Heh, nah the real reason is I just don' get anything out of watching sports.

Facebook/Twitter - 10 years ago this would be replaced with "Blogging" which I have also never been into. I don't need to report on, or read about, the mundane details of life. I'm just not "online social." This is really the only forum I read and post on. I think I know the reason why, but it's too long to go into here and I am sure I've posted it at least once in the past 10 years.

News - I hate the news. Most of the time it's sensationalized crap. I hate how they throw every trick in the book at you to attempt to reel you in to read their article or watch their segment. Actual, unbiased-and-to-the-point news I am generally ok with. But even then, it's not always something I am into. For instance, the news story a couple years ago about the guy who kept his daughter a prisoner in a shack in his back yard and then also fathered like 7 children with her..... How in the ****ing hell am I a better person for knowing about this?! How does this morbid and horrible story benefit my life for having learned of it?

Which brings me to another problem I have with the news, they eat up horrible and tragic stories as if they were candy that caused instant orgasms. Likely because the public eats the same stories for the same reasons. It's like people WANT to be shocked and appalled at the world they live in.

And yet another problem I have with the news, is the scare tactics they use. They go out of their way to magnify and hype up the danger and deadliness of whatever it is they are reporting on. And yet, when actual events happen that can create REAL fear (like the September 11th attacks) the news clams up and tries to reeeeeally downplay the fear and deadliness aspect of things. ****ing cowards with double-standards.

Sorry. I am done ranting about the news. Ahem.

Harry Potter movies - I kinda "checked out" of the books around book 4 and haven't really thought they were all that great since (I did read them all, but if you were to ask me details of any of the last three, I wouldn't be able to give any). The movies are even more "meh" for me. I usually don't even know a new one has come out until I see that it's on a DVD display in Best Buy.

24 - Tried watching Season 1 recently. I quit after about the 15th hour or so. If I had watched it when it first came out, when the concept was a novelty.... maybe I'd enjoy it more. Watching it with today's eyes, it looks like the writers had a great first season written, but only 12 episodes worth (which generally all first seasons of shows have, 12 episodes... half of normal) but then they realized "Ah crap... we have to fill 12 more episodes because we decided to call the show "24."

Lost - Haven't seen a single episode yet.

Simpsons - Used to be a HUGE fan of the show, from day 1. I could quote most episodes and could hang with most Simpsons trivia geeks. But then the show (for me) started to decline around the late 90s and I finally just stopped watching the show completely around the year 2000. Haven't watched a new episode in 10 years.

Television - The last few things made me realize.... I just don't watch tv, period. It is not uncommon for me to go literally 8 months before watching a show on my DVR.

This used to be on my list as well. Then I started watching it about 2 months ago from the beginning, with no spoilers. My mind was instantly changed. It's no longer on my list.

Likewise. Still waiting for season 6 to come out on DVD (or, hopefully, Netflix Streaming) so I can finish it.

For me:

Sports (Blech. Boring waste of time and funding. Scholastic performance slips all the time, but heaven forbid your local college doesn't get that new stadium. And pro athletes NOT make an outrageous amount of money every year? Bite your tongue!)

Ice Cream (I like the occasional dip, but otherwise -- haven't really craved it in many years)

Online Console Gaming (If I want to play online, I'll turn on my computer. Console input devices just are not adequate for online gaming, IMO.)

Dancing/Clubbing (Going to a glorified bar that is over-crowded, filled with drunk/high/smoking people, with music blaring to ear-bleeding levels while you make a fool of yourself with your shitty dancing skills? No thanks.)

Texting (Gotta pay more money for the ability to type short, often misspelled messages to someone, taking your attention away from more important things like . . . driving, working, walking near a busy street, watching your children.)

Going to Movies (Theaters are the devil -- noisy people who insist on chatting through the whole damn movie; 30 minutes of previews; sticky floors/uncomfortable seats)

The Beach (Having the cancer-causing rays of the sun beat down on you, while having to wear greasy sunscreen, swimming in waters that has Lord knows what in it. And no way in hell am I getting into just bathing shorts for all to see.)

Wow, man. No offense, but how do you hang out with anyone? What do you do with your time off?

Tbh, I don't really hang out with people that often.

When I do, it's generally some friends who come over the house.

Usually something happens to ruin my social experiences anyway so I stopped bothering.

Sports Cannot. stand. I literally do not understand the appeal. Now, keep in mind I'm not talking about the activity itself...I fully support going out and playing with friends, having fun with family after a Thanksgiving dinner, etc.. That is activity being performed by you. But there is a world of disconnect for me with the idea that people attach their egos to players, or schools, or teams with whom they have utterly no connection. What is the appeal of watching a sporting event? Why are you a fan of this person? He/she/that team cares absolutely nothing about you, has no idea who you are, and are nothing to you but a name and stats. I can even understand getting into a sports-based movie...then, the people for whom you root are characters, they're overcoming obstacles...if the writing and acting are done well enough, you've reason to care about them.

If it makes you happy, go for it. Enjoy it to your heart's content. But this is The Big One That I Don't Understand. There are many things which I understand but with which I disagree. But with this, there's a complete disconnect between myself and the ability to even understand this one.

Ice Cream Not a huge fan (I don't generally have much of a sweet tooth), but Dippin' Dots are teh yum.

Online Console Gaming I'm not a huge fan of online gaming period, I suppose. I like hopping on with friends from here, or RL friends with whom I haven't reconnected in a while, but to just get online and play with random strangers? Not really my cup of tea. It helps that the kinds of games I enjoy generally focus on the single-player.

Dancing/Clubbing Never really dug this one. I'm not a big drinker, I feel stupid dancing, and I hate cigarette smoke. No thanks.

Texting I don't get why people get so butt-hurt about texting. If you don't like it, don't do it...but it's a handy way to communicate to people when A) it's hard to hear, B) an easy way to have a reference, particularly if the opposite party isn't currently able to write down information, and C) you just need to get a message across quickly without the rigamarole of normal conversation.

Going to Movies How do you not enjoy going to the movies? It's like church to me. Much like church, I do hate when people are being disruptive or loud, but you know what? The downside to social events is that they have other people there. Deal with it.

The Beach Ugh. Much H9. Sand gets everywhere, most beaches are polluted festering trash disposals, and the last time I went to the beach I wound up with some sort of hellish allergic reaction on my back that lasted for days. If I never again visit a beach it'll be too soon.

Lost I was mildly impressed by the first season (Phe liked it more than I did), but the quality dip in the second season made me shy away, and upon further reflection, I just didn't care for the show enough on the whole to bother with the rest.

Social Networking It's OK. A nice time-killer, particularly if you don't have the patience to be a dedicated blogger.

Cars I'm not a mechanic, and have no interest in being one. That's a life skill I'm just going to skip. I'm not interested in what's under the hood, or any other gearhead talk. I just want something that looks at least moderately attractive, gets me where I want to go and back, and has an air conditioner. Cruise is a welcome addition.

Phones I'm actually not a big fan at all of talking on the phone. Which is odd, as I love my phone and it's become one of the main hubs of electronic life. I just find the actual phone functionality to be...largely unimportant. Talking on the phone takes a particular type of energy that I really, really don't have. I feel absolutely drained afterward.

Reality Television H9. Next.

Rap/Hip-Hop/R&B Music Again, this is one I simply don't "get." These musical genres hold no interest for me. I'm quite eclectic in my tastes, though in general I trend toward classic rock, blues, classic country, and showtunes (yeah, deal with it...they're full of exuberance and fun to sing, and for them I make no apologies). The most offensive on this list, however, is easily "R&B." Mainly, I think, because they appropriated the name of "rhythm and blues," which is completely different (and good...but I repeat myself). It doesn't help that the entire genre is standard uninteresting boilerplate pablum.

Computer Non-MMO Gaming Computers are great for work. They're great for MMOs (RTSes too, I suppose, but I don't like strategy games). Any other game, if at all possible, I will play on a console. For the most part, I simply don't enjoy gaming on the PC.

Because it's a completely different experience? I mean, if the medium doesn't work with your biology, I understand that, but saying "And I can read a book faster than I can watch the movie, so why bother?" is like saying "I can fly a kite more easily than I can rescue a drowning baby from a hungry alligator, so why bother?" Different purposes, different experiences, apples and oranges.

I see what you're saying, but my point was that there's not enough benefit in movie watching over reading (both of which are simply mediums for storytelling) to overcome the physical issue. Your kite/rescue analogy is a bit lacking, it's a little closer to 'I don't run marathons because I have bad knees. Anyway, I can drive faster than I could run.' If the point of the marathon is to run for health then speed is irrelevant... but if the point it to get a message to Athens as quickly as possible then drive! In the case of the movie vs book, if the point is to enjoy a movie then clearly a book won't do... but if the goal is to get as much story in a specific time frame as possible without puking I'm way better off with the book.
